A Budget Isn’t About Spending Less. Its About This….
People always get scared to show me their budget because they think I’m going to tell them where they are spending too much money.
But that isn’t the case.
My goal is to optimize your budget, not just reduce it.
Optimizing your spending focuses on where your money is going. Building a spending plan and sticking to it is more than just spending less. It is telling your money where you want it to go and putting it to work for you.
What are you spending money on that adds no value to your life? These are your money leaks.
Money leaks are different for everyone and something you have to constantly re-evaluate. For example, for a long time I was really into boutique magazines that are beautiful and have great writing. They were pricey, but it was worth it because of the enjoyment I got out of them. But once I had my son, I realized that they had been piling up for months. My magazine subscriptions had morphed into a money leak. So I cut way back on my subscriptions, saved money, and don’t have to feel bad about the unread stack anymore.
When you identify your money leaks, you can redirect that money into things that add more value to your life.
Right now, that money is better spent on my garden and baby clothes. But that might change again in the future so I will continue to check back in with my spending regularly.
Optimizing your spending forces you to think deeper about your spending and your priorities. It’s like the old saying, you can do anything but not everything.
This week, I challenge you to identify a money leak in your life and redirect that money into a higher priority item. How did it go for you? I want to hear from you in the comments!!
